Ishpeming Public School District No.1

Board of Education

Welcome

The Board of Education appreciates your interest in the Ishpeming School District.  The board welcomes you and hopes that you will be in frequent attendance. This page will provide you with information regarding board meetings and responsibilities.

Board Meetings

Regular meetings of the Board of Education are held the second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Ishpeming High School library. A portion of each board meeting is devoted to public comment. All meetings of the Board of Education are open to the public except those specifically exempted by the Public Act 267.

Board Members

The Board of Education consists of seven residents of the district each elected to a four  year term. Members of the Board of Education are elected at the annual election held each June. In most elections, two board positions are on the ballot. Any resident of the Ishpeming School District who has attained eighteen years of age may run for election. Nominating petitions are available in March of each year.

Board Responsibilities

The Board of Education is a governmental body that can take action only at a public meeting. A quorum of four members must be present in order for the board to act. Four "yes" votes are required to pass a resolution. The board is charged by law with the determination of general policies for the management of the district. As representatives of the public, the board establishes policy and manages resources to meet the educational needs of the community.

Board Meeting Agenda

The board meeting agenda is available at the board meetings and also at the superintendent's office on the Friday preceding the regular board meetings. Board members receive the agenda in advance of the meeting in order to review and carefully consider the items to be discussed. It is not prudent for the board to act without complete information. Therefore, the board will seldom consider items not on the agenda.

Citizen Participation

Any citizen concerned about the program and policies of the district may speak at a board meeting. The board values the opportunity to hear citizen comments and questions. The board reserves time at the beginning and end of each meeting for public comment. Remarks should be held to a maximum of five minutes as several individuals may wish to address the board.

Additional Information

The official minutes of all board meetings, as well as district policies are available for examination at the superintendent's office located at 319 E. Division Street. Detailed information can be obtained by contacting Superintendent Stephen Piereson (485-5501).
