Students Stories
Published at I.H.S.
“Baseball was my life when I was
younger. I ate, breathed, drank, lived and
dreamt baseball. It wasn’t the boys. And it
wasn’t the attention I got for being the only
girl. It was the thrill of the game, the sounds
of the crowd, and the feel of the glove on my
hand.”
Ishpeming High School junior Katelyn Hough, 16,
is the author of this excerpt from her story
“Home at Third” that appeared recently in the
school publication “Places.”

High School Bowl Team
Advances
This year's High School
Bowl team is currently on another run deep into
the tournament, going to their second Final Four
appearance in many years, which is a school
first! After getting a first round bye,
the team demolished Sault Ste. Marie 400-115,
moving on to the Sweet Sixteen against Iron
Mountain. They won that match 305-160, then
dispatched Manistique 315-85. Their
semi-final match will be against the Gladstone
Braves, and the winner of this match will go on
to compete in the finals for scholarship money.
This year's team members include Ben Pascoe (capt),
Tom Polkki, Spencer Lindenberg, and Eric
Laksonen. Ishpeming's match against Manistique
will be aired the first week in April on Channel
13. Good luck IHS!

accepted. For

Students Create Mini-Society
Students in Linda Bonetti's fourth grade class
just completed an economic unit called
Mini-Society. Students created their own
business, bought classroom resources, made
products, paid rent, paid the storekeeper, and
learned economic concepts in the process.
They sold their products during the school
talent show and made a profit of $145.31 which
they donated to the Marquette County Humane
Society.
Students Dine with Great Writers
About a dozen students gather every Friday in
English teacher Tim Clancy's classroom to
participate in the great books discussion group.
Participants are assigned weekly reading
assignments consisting of fiction and
non-fiction literary anthologies from ancient to
modern times written by a variety of highly
regarded authors from around the world. The
students then express their opinions regarding
the reading in the discussion group facilitated
by Clancy. For more on this story,

Values on Display in Class
C.L. Phelps
students are receiving a hands-on lesson in core
democratic values by helping Hurricane Katrina
victims. Paul Steinke's fifth-grade homeroom
students spearheaded a collection for Katrina
victims by hanging handmade posters in the
school hallways encouraging people to donate and
collecting money from each classroom.

Ishpeming Schools Receive "A" Grades
The Birchview School, Central School, C.L. Phelps School
and the Ishpeming High School have all received
"A" grades on their Michigan Department of
Education School Report Cards. In
addition, each of the schools achieved the
Adequate Yearly Progress standard required under
the Federal No Child Left Behind Act. For more

Class promotes good deeds: Learning to
give
Being a kind-hearted person is worth more than a
test score in Paul Steinke's fifth grade social
studies class. The C.L. Phelps students in
his class recently finished a month-long project
in which they each had to complete 30 good deeds
in 30 days. The activities had to be above and
beyond what they're already expected to do.

Veterans Receive High School Diplomas
On May 28, 2000 the Ishpeming School District
held a formal graduation ceremony for those
veterans who left the Ishpeming High School for
military service in WWII and the Korean War.
Now, the office of Representative Bart Stupak is
organizing a centralized high school graduation
of WWII and Korean War veterans currently
residing in Alger, Delta, Dickinson, Marquette,
Menominee, and Schoolcraft counties who entered
the war without receiving a high school diploma.
Any veteran in the Ishpeming Area that did not
receive a diploma from the May 28, 2000
graduation and would like to participate in this
ceremony is asked to contact Dr. Stephen
Piereson, Superintendent of Schools at
(906)-485-5501. (Please note: this
event has already occurred, it is posted for

Auditorium Air Handling Project
Enjoying a well attended performance at our W.C.
Peterson Auditorium can be a warm experience.
Our 73 year old air handling system with it's
huge, noisy, exhaust fan can't be used during
performances and the stale air warms up quickly.
For two years, the Ishpeming High School Alumni
Association's Board of Directors has been
looking for a solution. They've worked
with Johnson Controls on improving air handling
(first phase) and total air conditioning (second
phase) and find there is a way to complete the
air handling portion at a reasonable cost.
The total project (air conditioning) doesn't
seem to be cost effective at this time.
